Through the systematic layout of bars, humans have created the language of bars. Various barcodes facilitate classification, trade, and order to make the capitalist market economy more efficient and “save time.” The binary dichotomy between barcodes in black and white and the information hidden in the merciless straightness of the bars is, in itself, an interesting perspective on the world. It is not an anthropocentric way of communication. Each bar and the space between them matter in the entirety; otherwise, the code will become unreadable, just like every organism has its place in the ecosystem, even though the order of the forest and barcode don’t seem to have much in common at first glance.
Alexander Salvesen is a visual artist living in Helsinki. He works mainly with light, studying and wondering about its manifestations and features by using different techniques. Salvesen’s work often emphasizes the relationships between color and form, and with his works, he seeks to sensitize the experiencer’s senses, to stop by them to reflect and feel them.
