SiniParikka

The multiple dimensions of urban culture are a natural way for Sini Parikka to interact with her surroundings and fellow travellers. In her work, she takes a stand for sustainably built environments. Her inspiration comes from site-specificity, the use of recycled materials, participation and experientiality.

Parikka has worked as Flow’s landscape architect since 2016 and is in charge of constructing nearly ten pieces for the festival area. The entire lifespan of the materials is considered, and multiple installations use, for example, construction waste and overflow. The material used circles in Flow’s production for several years.

The Underground Lounge makes the unseen infrastructure visible – giant black water pipes offer shelter and seating behind the Heineken Silver Arena. Ventilation ducts form a rhythmic piece on the wall of the old brick gasometer. Firegami’s colourful flames are sawed from salvaged waste plywood, and the lush Skatepark Jungle is constructed of used car tires. The plants used in the work are often borrowed and come to life with lighting design by Sun Effects. This year, discarded materials are praised – near the Black Tent, a four-meter-tall Wastelicious cake rises to celebrate the diverse cultural centre that is Suvilahti.
